Ko Samet (also known as Ko Samed) is an island in the Gulf of Thailand on the eastern side of the country (the same similar as the more popular but very touristy Ko Samui, it is much smaller and has a microclimate making it an good beach choice for July and August). It is a great location after our elephants, mountains and waterfalls itinerary for couples or families which ends in the Khao Yai area and easy to get back to the airport (boat and road without any additional flights).
It is a relatively-quiet island, particularly if you stay away from the busier areas and stay at the
Mooban Talay resort towards the north of the island, set on the edge of a national park. This is the quietest part of Ko Samed.
The beach is blindingly white, the food delicious, the accommodation nicely decorated, the pool is lovely. The resort is a laid-back one, and suitable for couples of all ages and families with children of all ages. The staff are very friendly.
If you'd like to explore, you can take a speedboat trip to snorkel on the outlying islands. It is also easy to get around the island using local transport.
Please note that whilst we at Tell Tale Travel love the Mooban Talay, it is not for those seeking luxury, it is on the edge of a jungle and away from it all, though the accommodation is comfortable. The feedback from Tell Tale Travel guests who've seen both the Mooban Talay and other resorts on the island is that it is the best fit, however, if you are looking for something luxurious (but will be more European in style) see below.
Set in the north wast of the island in the scenic bar, the
Ao Phrao is a more international in feeling resort.
The resort has villas up the tropical hillside which have fantastic views over the beach and sea. Ao Phrao beach can get busy with daytrippers, but the resort is a nice retreat and it is a beautiful beach with fantastic views at sunset.
