Visit national parks and mountains in northern Thailand
North Eastern Thailand
Eco Living

Thailand may not be the first place to come to mind when you think of organic crops and people living sustainable lifestyles but there's a growing culture of Thai people going back to nature and living with the land.

The North Eastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, known to locals as Korat, is not the first place people think of visiting but is getting very popular with eco-loving people from big towns like Bangkok. Home to the UNESCO world heritage site of Khao Yai National Park, this region benefits from flourishing nature and wonderful landscapes in every direction. Blessed with natural beauty and almost year-round perfect weather, it's the ideal eco-living location.

Advertising executive Nung is a man lucky enough to be able to call this place home, at least at weekends. He and his wife Jeab discovered a beautiful area away from the hustle and bustle four years ago and thought this was the place they wanted to retire to. They love breathing in the crisp air and watching the enchanting morning mists dance on the hills. Nung says, "Our house is situated on the high ground, around 500 meters above sea level. The air is so fresh here and there are people from all walks of life who share the appreciation of nature here and are happy to adopt the lifestyle of the village."

The land is incredibly fertile and there's an abundance of organic farms growing vegetables such as Chinese Shiitake mushrooms and herbs. Nung's wife Jeab says, "Plants and trees in this area are so diverse that many of them are used as herbal medicine and it's great for cooking. We use organic produce from our garden and the village to cook when we're here. It's yummy-guarantee"

The nearby national parks and forests offer lots of opportunity to spot wildlife such as exotic birds, monkeys, elephants and herds of bull-like gaur. "It's a great experience waiting in silence for them," adds Nung. "Sometimes you'll see a herd of up to 60 gaur walk past as you watch from a tree-house viewing point".

Tell Tale Tips: You can go with Nung and Jeab on a special night safari in the nearby jungle with a local ranger. It's an amazing way to see animals in their natural habitat.
