Saturday 2 November 2013:
This morning, meet photographer at London Heathrow and fly to Colombo with Sri Lankan Airlines. Alternatively, you can meet us on Day 2 in Colombo if you book this trip without flights. We will meet you at the airport (or pick you up at a hotel).
Early hours arrival at Colombo airport and transfer to your hotel and settle into your rooms. Lie in or enjoy the pool. You'll have a late lunch and an induction then you'll be straight off to explore a bustling market and then ending at Colombo's famous Galle Face Green for spectacular sunset pictures.
Time to head off, you'll be driving to Tissamaharama, near Yala National Park. When you get there, you'll settle into a resort which will be your base for the next few days. In the late afternoon, you'll explore the area, including the large Tissa Wewa lake, this is an artificial lake part of an irrigation system dating back to the 3rd century BC, and surrounded by majestic trees with colourful tropical birds flitting in and out of them. You'll have dinner at an open air local restaurant.
Time to start snapping some animals! A very early start and then a day with a wildlife guide in Yala National Park. You'll definitely see deer, peacocks, crocodiles and more, though we usually see wild elephants and often leopards too. This will be a full day though you will have time for a picnic lunch and a nap on the beach which fringes the park.
Another early start and another morning in Yala National Park. You'll then head back to your resort and have the afternoon free to relax by the pool. This evening, you will visit Kataragama, a town which attracts people from all of Sri Lanka's faiths (Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Muslim) and see elephants in one of their many jobs (they are often used by temples as well as plantations).
Leisurely morning then you'll go via car to Sinharaja rainforest, the last virgin rainforest in Sri Lanka and UNESCO world heritage site.
A chance to take photos of colourful birds with a day in Sinharaja rainforest with an expert birdwatching guide.
Pack up and drive to a resort in Bentota on Sri Lanka's winding west coast. This afternoon, you'll take seascapes including photographs of fishermen on stilts.
Leisurely start then a day in historic Galle, a UNESCO world heritage site and considered the best remaining fortified city built by Europeans (in this case Dutch) in Asia. Sunsets here a particularly lovely.
A very early start. You'll be Beruwala in time to see the brightly-coloured fishing boats being unloaded this morning. The harbour is home to more than 600 boats and catches include shark! Then you'll visit Kechimalai Mosque, thought to the oldest Islamic mosque in Sri Lanka (Beruwala is probably where the Arab traders who introduced Islam to Sri Lanka first landed).
Morning visit to turtle hatchery or boat trip (TBC). Free afternoon. Evening farewell dinner and wrap up of everything you've learnt.
Morning transfer to arrive at Colombo airport by 10:15am. Direct flight back to the UK with Sri Lankan Airlines, arriving back same day around 7:45pm (UK time). We are also able to book your return flight on a different date at no extra charge. If you have booked your tour without flights, you are welcome to join this transfer to the airport or we can drop you off anywhere on the road between Bentota and Colombo (e.g. Mount Lavinia) or in Colombo or Negombo.
This 12-day tour costs £2,100pp including direct flights between Heathrow and Colombo, accommodation, photography and workshops with photographer, sightseeing and other activities/excursions, guides, most meals and transport in private comfortable air-conditioned minibuses. There is No Single Supplement. Please allow up to £50 for entrance fees.
